Artist Statement
Inside this portfolio you will find artwork that I have created from last semester to now. It has different photos, different concepts, and you’ll be able to tell just by how I’ve grown with ones are from this semester. Adjustment Layers, Self Portraits, Shutter Speed, ISO, Light Metering, Personal Metaphor, Aesthetic Experience, Hybrid, Movie Moments, Chocolate Frog, Shadows and Reflections, Program Designs, Aged, Balance and Frames, Random Object, Egg Challenge, My Favorite Project From Last Semester, and Last Semester and extra things are a list of the pictures we had to take from the beginning of the school year to the end.
I have learned about different modes of a camera that I never knew were there. For example, Shutter Speed, ISO, Light Metering, Rule of Thirds, and a lot more. When we first learned about what the modes on the first camera we had I knew that it was going to be a lot that I didn’t know. I think I was most successful with the black and white photos we had to do. I found those pictures successful because you have to see black and white before you actually take the picture. Which just mean if you have too much light when you take the photo, then change it to black and white, there’s a good chance that it won’t come out the way you intended on it.
I mostly struggled with my emotions and composition in each of my photos. I either look the same in all or they all give you the same feeling. In some I expressed an emotion I wasn’t trying to express so people would get the wrong idea when it came down to it. I could improve in the future if I become more comfortable with the concept of taking pictures that show the “me” I want the world to see. Right now I’m just stuck on getting it done not caring how I look. But in the future if I become more comfortable with it my photos could be a lot better. As long as I keep looking on our class main page at all the artist we learned about I’m sure I’ll get better. These men and women have some of the most amazing photographs I have ever seen. Even the ones who didn’t paint or take picture but worked with their hands have great things. After seeing what has been done in the world makes me want to get better so I can make it where their photos are.
There’s a lot of growth in my artwork and artist statements alone. At first I was all about not caring or just finishing. Now I work harder and longer to make everything look perfect and make sense. I believe that the photos I have taken and the ones others have taken of me shows who I am. Except for the ones we did in Photoshop, which was where we made our photos a different color, add a different texture, and even put text on the photos. Photoshop helped me fix a lot of projects, especially if I was in need of some serious cropping. This is just when you take away some space that’s unwanted in the photo.

Self Portraits

My ideas for this project were to simple capture me without my usual sulking about. In my idea only changed for my personal prop photo. We were supposed to find something that meant something to us and I had two things, my nephew and my friends from school. And they all mean a lot to me but my nephew came out as my something special because he means even more to me. In my opinion my element picture was the most creative. I like how the line in front of the camera leads to another line that leads to me. Then you have a bunch of lines that comes down in the background. I had two difficult photos when it came to creativity. My rule of thirds photo and my personal prop. With my personal prop I knew what it was but I couldn’t find a way to actually capture it. With my rule of thirds I had a harder time because it wasn’t something in particular that you needed inside of it. So, trying to create a photo that could catch someone’s eye was difficult for me. The creativity in my self-portraits were just me trying not to look like me, to find a different approach to people actually seeing how I am in these pictures we take.
All but one of my photos was set up specifically and that was my light photo. I was just standing there thinking of something to do when the person took my picture. It turned out nice but it wasn’t planned. In one of my photos I had to crop out some people in the background because my partner forgot to wait until they passed by. I think my not actually paying attention could’ve weakened my photo. And this is only because my partner and I didn’t communicate much but even then it wasn’t so bad. I believe that my rule of thirds have the best composition because of the background and how much depth it possesses. My personal prop photo I would change the composition but I’m not exactly sure how. I just know that it would look even better set up in a different way.
For most of my pictures I fixed the ISO and the shutter speed. My partner I do believe said she was changing the ISO and shutter speed of some of my pictures. I think my element and personal prop might have been a little to gray too. Using my camera at home and not understanding how to change things is the result of gray personal prop photo. There is much strength in each of my photos and they are that you can see what’s inside the picture and the fact that even though I think some are to gray you can still tell what’s going on inside of them.
I think my portraits are nice and really reflect me well. I think I had some pretty awesome ideas when it came to them all. I might find even better ways to show a unique way of me if I had to do redo this assignment. My favorite shot overall was my element picture because of how you can follow the lines to get to me. My least favorite was the rule of thirds because it harder for me to find the perfect spot for the photo. I think that each one is in its own way very special and full of hard work that took thought and wasn’t easy to do even if it seems like it was.
